TIANJIN, Dec 15 Asia Pulse - Shell (China) Group will conduct research on oil shale in China for the appraisal of the potential for developing oil shale resources so as to expand the scope of energy utilization.

 

Recently the Shell Exploration Co. Ltd signed a cooperative agreement related to oil shale research with the Jilin Provincial Geological and Mineral Exploration Development Bureau in northeast China.

 

According to the agreement, the two sides will set up a cooperative venture to conduct the research on the oil shale resources in Jilin Province for commercial development. The cooperative venture will undertake the experiments on the spot.

 

Following the success of spot experiments, the venture will go into commercial production at a suitable time.

 

Shell has developed the oil shale conversion technology to produce shale oil underground. Such technology is now in pilot demonstration in the United States.

 

An official from the Shell (China) Group said that China abounds in oil shale resources as Jilin Province is one of the provinces rich in oil shale reserves in the country, adding that from a long-term point of view, oil shale resources might ease the countrys energy demand to a certain extent and reduce the import of oil.

 

The official noted that the Shell would join hands with the relevant departments to conduct the research and development of oil shale resources.
